KuraSurf FAQ

FAQ – Got questions about our SurfWeeks in Lombok?

Lombok is one of Indonesia’s best surf destinations thanks to its consistent Indian Ocean swell, and a wide variety of waves—from beginner-friendly beach breaks to world-class reefs. With stunning beaches, warm water, and a laid-back island vibe, it offers us a magical place to help our guests enjoy surfing in Indonesia.

Lombok offers waves year-round. The dry season (April - October) generally delivers larger swells. And the wet season (November - March) offers glassy mornings and smaller, fun conditions perfect for beginners. We are always able to find the right spot for our groups. Either more exposed beaches for smaller days, or hidden bays for when the swell is big and we need to deliver something more user-friendly.

Depending on your surf level, the best surf spots around Kuta Lombok include Gerupuk, with its mellow inside reef breaks; Tanjung Aan, known for long, playful rides; and Selong Belanak, one of the most beginner-friendly beach breaks in Indonesia. These spots offer consistent waves, soft takeoffs, and plenty of room to progress safely and confidently. For those feeling a bit more adventurous, we also have Mawi and Serangan available. Beyond the above listed waves, we have plenty of spots but as every surfer knows, we can’t blow up a spot online.

Yes — Lombok is an excellent place to learn surfing, often even better than Bali. The conditions are more relaxed, and beginners have access to gentler, more forgiving breaks. Many also consider the surf spots in Lombok more beautiful than the general waves available in Bali. You get all the beauty and consistency of Indonesia’s surf scene without the hectic lineups, making learning faster, safer, and more enjoyable.

For your first surf trip to Indonesia, know that the sun is intense, the reefs can be sharp, and the waves can be powerful, so reef-safe sunscreen, booties, and basic ocean awareness go a long way. It’s also important to respect local surf etiquette, stay hydrated, and be prepared for early-morning sessions when conditions are best.

Yes — Lombok has good waves all year round. The dry season (April–October) brings the most consistent swells and clean conditions, while the wet season (November - March) offers plenty of fun, glassy waves, especially for beginners and intermediates.
Absolutely — Lombok is one of the best places in Indonesia for complete beginners. The area around Kuta Lombok has gentle, forgiving waves, soft takeoffs and slow rolling point breaks, making it easy and safe to learn your first pop-ups and ride your first green waves.

The most famous surf breaks in South Lombok include Gerupuk with many different waves and Tanjung Aan. We also have the world-renowned Desert Point on the southwest coast. These spots offer everything from mellow learner waves to long, hollow barrels that attract surfers from around the world.

For a surf trip to Lombok, pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and light clothing for the strong sun, plus booties if you’re new to reef breaks. A basic first-aid kit, bug spray and reusable water bottle will keep you comfortable and ready for every session. We also offer many of these items for sale here at KuraSurf and Kuta has many shops as well. So, no worries if you’ve left behind your favorite hat.
