Getting to Lombok

Getting to Lombok: Flights, Boats & Travel Tips for Surfers

Lombok might sound like it’s on a remote island hidden in the Indonesian archipelago, but getting here is easier than most people think. Whether you’re flying in from Europe, Australia, the US, or just hopping over from Bali, this guide breaks down all the best ways to get to Lombok, what to expect along the way, and how to arrive relaxed, rested, and ready to surf.

If you’re planning a surf trip, holiday, or extended stay in South Lombok — this is everything you need to know.

Why Lombok Is Worth the Journey

Lombok offers something that’s getting harder to find: peace and tranquility.

Fewer crowds, less traffic, small island feel, world-class waves, empty beaches, and a slower rhythm of life.

Also, you’re more likely to be in traffic to let the water buffalo cross the street than any other kind of rush hour traffic.

For surfers, it means better conditions, more progression, and a deeper connection to the island.

Yes, it takes one extra step compared to Bali — but once you arrive, you’ll understand why it’s worth the extra mile.

Flying Directly to Lombok (LOP)

✈️ Lombok International Airport (LOP)

Lombok has its own international airport, located in South Lombok, near Kuta Lombok. This is close to the main surf zones and to KuraSurf. Plus, we offer free airport pickup for all guests arriving at the airport. Most international flights connect in Bali – and your flight from Bali to Lombok is only about 30 minutes.

Driving distances from the airport:

  • Airport → Kuta Lombok: ~25 minutes
  • Airport → Gerupuk Bay: ~35 minutes
  • Airport → Selong Belanak: ~45 minutes

This is the smoothest and least stressful option.

Common Flight Routes to Lombok

  • Jakarta (CGK): ~2 hours
  • Bali (DPS): ~30 minutes
  • Singapore / Kuala Lumpur: ~2 hours
  • Australia (Perth/Melbourne/Sydney): Depends on where in Australia, but anywhere from 2 – 5 hours. Requires a layover in Bali Denpasar Airport (DPS). There is discussion of direct flights from Perth to Lombok, but we haven’t seen anything yet. Perhaps for the second half of 2026.

💡 Tip: Arrive directly in Lombok from your international departure city (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur) for faster immigration lines.

Bali → Lombok (Most Popular Route)

Many travelers arrive in Bali first, then continue to Lombok. This gives you more international flight options and flexibility. Bali’s airport infrastructure handles more international arrivals, and is a smart hub to transit in since it’s so close.

Bali to Lombok by Flight (Recommended)

  • Flight time: ~40 minutes
  • Route: DPS → LOP
  • Pros: Fast, reliable, surfboard-friendly
  • Cons: Slightly more expensive than boats

If you’ve already flown long-haul or are carrying boards, this is usually the best choice.

Bali to Lombok by Fast Boat

  • Travel time: 2–4 hours
  • Departure ports: Padang Bai, Serangan, Amed
  • Arrival ports: Bangsal or Senggigi
  • Pros: Scenic, cheaper
  • Cons: Sea conditions, delays, not ideal with jet lag or boards, cannot go with scooter, so you’ll need a ride to the port in Bali.

⚠️ Warning: If the ocean is choppy, flying is far more comfortable.

Ferry & Overland (Slow but Adventurous)

This route involves:

  • Driving to Padang Bai (Bali) from the Bali Airport (DPS)
  • Public ferry to Lembar Port (Lombok)
  • Driving south to Kuta Lombok

It’s the cheapest but also the slowest and least predictable. Best for travelers with time and patience.

With this option, you can also rent your motorbike in Bali and then take it over to Lombok with you (be sure to notify your rental location as they will need to approve this).

You can also take as many boards as you like and you will not be charged extra.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most travelers enter Indonesia using:

  • Visa on Arrival (VOA): 30 days
  • Extendable once for another 30 days
  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months

👉 Note: For longer stays, many surfers extend locally or plan visa runs.

Transport from Lombok Airport

Once you land at LOP:

  • Airport taxis are available
  • Ride-hailing apps are inconsistent
  • Private drivers are the easiest option

🛻 Important: If you’re staying at a surf camp or hotel in Kuta Lombok, airport pickup is usually simple to arrange.

🛻 KuraSurf Guests: If you’re staying at KuraSurf, we offer free airport pickup with our dedicated private driver.

Getting to Kuta Lombok (Surf Base)

Kuta Lombok is the hub for South Lombok surfing:

  • Selong Belanak
  • Tanjung Aan
  • Gerupuk (Inside & Outside)
  • Mawi

Roads are good, traffic is light, and within 30 minutes you’ll feel very far from the maelstrom of anything close to a city.

Traveling with Surfboards to Lombok

Lombok is extremely surf-friendly:

  • Airlines are used to board bags
  • Airport staff are relaxed
  • Local drivers know how to load boards properly and will often have straps, ties and other supplies ready to go in their car.

Best Time of Day to Arrive

Ideal arrival window: Morning to early afternoon

This allows:

  • Daylight airport transfer
  • Easier check-in
  • Time to settle before dawn patrol the next day

Late-night arrivals are possible — just less relaxed, and most domestic plus international flights come in before 5pm.
